Great rig, very low distortion receiver....
I bought mine new, wanting to evaluate the optional Collins mechanical filter in a modern solid-state transceiver. This model was the amateur version of Yaesu's HF marine xcvr of the time, built for user ergonomics and high reliability more than a typical ham's taste for bells and whistles. I decided that the Collins SSB filter skirt selectivity was a bit lacking and added an identical filter in series, using the vacant CW filter socket, simply rewiring the I/O wires for series ssb connections, adding one bridge resistor between the two filters for impedance matching. .Nothing gets through this IF setup unless it is within the passband- I've had several Collins and SBE rigs using Collins filters in my 60+ years of hamming- this is the best implementation of mechanical IF filtering of all, and in general is a fine, fatigue-free receiver. My only realistic design concern has been a lack of roofing filter, a project I set aside because it rarely is needed outside of multi-rig contesting camps.
