An Entertaining Master Class for All Ages
Bernstein was a master teacher as well as conductor and composer. He was articulate and clear in explaining and demonstrating a wide range of musical terms and ideas. The concerts were geared for young audiences (children and teens) but are great fun for all ages. Most of these archive performances were recorded via kinescope, but the quality of the material well offsets the occasional infelicities of image. This set is truly a treasure.

Neo-Golden Age Impossible Crimes Mystery
Another neo-golden age mystery, inspired especially by John Dickson Carr and Clayton Rawson, whose Great Merlini has much in common with Joseph Spector, a retired magician, or illusionist as he prefers to be called, who works with the police (Scotland Yard) in 1930s England, to solve impossible crimes. There are three of them in this outing, and if the explanations may stretch credibility at times, they are all worth the suspension of disbelief. Mead's previous Spector mystery, "Death and the Conjuror," is also excellent. I will now seek out the newest, "Cabaret Macabre."

Late Golden Age Mystery with Vanishers
This classic (1948) mystery involves a family whose members have often disappeared over the past 150 years. Set in a small Vermont town obsessed with its historic homes, the story follows a photojournalist who becomes an amateur detective as he gets caught up in fresh disappearances and murders. Variations on the locked room mystery a la John Dickson Carr flirt with the supernatural, but the final resolutions are satisfyingly rational. Great fun.
