The Triumph of the Moon A History of Modern Pagan Witchcraft 9780192854490
    23. Apr 2018
Valuable foundation of factual modern historical witchcraft.
I was asked a question by my nephew (as I am a practitioner of the “Old Ways” mixed with as much pre-history evidence as possible) he asked a question that involved my 36 years of reading and practicing so it was a difficult one. Then I looked through my library and realised the one author I trust to be academic but investigative and be interested but not swayed by the subject or it’s practitioners is Prof Ronald Hutton, a prolific author of all history and with an interest in the Occult/paganism/witchcraft but does not take part himself. He across a range of books examines its cultural, social and community interaction, how it weaves through society with the seasons of farmers and villagers, the countryside and folklore the book “Stations of the Sun” Prof Hutton, I also bought for my nephew as a companion study. Societies ritual behaviours and festivals through the year on agricultural land and maypole in villages for example. Which works well with understanding how society as a whole even in the church continues with such things as an alter at a harvest festival full of produce celebrating the yield with thanks. Which then helps to navigate the modern history since 1800,s of how “witchcraft” was resurrected, but mixed with the hidden. It allows the reader to gain a broad and full basic understanding of what actually occurred in the recent rise of witchcraft. All the players, how they connect and what influenced who, what changes over the years and what is realistic historically and what is inspirational adaption from what remains in our patterns of behaviour, our art, sculpture, traditions, and the practice of seasonal festivals across the islands of the British people or as I prefer to call myself as we are all a mix “Anglo-Celt”. Morris dancing and the Stag Dance with antlers around a village each year, whispers from the mists of time. Prof Hutton is respected by the leading groups and societies within the Pagan/Wicca/Druid world and does not get personal or negative but with relish explores the subjects within a historical field and seriously investigates the views and beliefs but not if it is real or believable, but will analyse its validity of claims. So this book is not flashy, not dramatic, not rehashed views but it is thoroughly intriguing, exploratory, encompassing and respectfully to the general reader academic with a broad enough awareness to not get bogged down in statistics or specialist gobbledygook. This “for my nephew” so hopefully for others will give him a starting foundation on nearly everything since the 1800,s to start on. To build a good foundation of his “occult” house, the pyramid on which he can start thereafter selecting and fine tuning his reading material, knowledge and views. Most importantly when any of the millions of so called “experts”, “manipulators”, “ignorant” or just plain “fakers” try to tell him, direct him, draw him in, impress him or even give him any of the billions of “occult” books and manuals from reprints of erm “grimoires” to “teen glam witchy books”! He will be able to evaluate the situation and statements and hopefully with this book be the one who knows the reality of our history not the illusion or glamour, allowing him to discover what he personally believes, trusts and practice a life that fulfils him with safety, knowledge and confidence. This is a good book as an introduction for many and a good read of discourse for the more knowledgable. Well worth reading and having, as always there are areas which I feel he’s not aware of or thought about and connections that could be followed, but that’s not a negative as that is what we have minds for. Blessings to you all 😉
