A classy package to honor a classy dancing duo.
The complete Astaire-Rogers movies in a handsome, sturdy box and art deco lettering to enhance a classy package. It's all Astaire and Rodgers, though, so if you want, say, "Royal Wedding" so you can see Fred walk across the ceiling, it's a separate purchase. The films are top-quality remasters. Although Astaire once identified Jane Powell as his favorite dancing partner, the magic and mastery of the Astaire-Rogers team is always graceful and beautiful, with a magic all its own on display in each and every film.

The Pied Pipers at Their Best
Pied Pipers recordings are hard to come by anymore, so this 21-song collection is most welcome, musically and historically. These tracks from the 1940s include recordings featuring the Pipers with Jo Stafford or Connie Haines as lead vocalists, and the Pipers backing young Frank Sinatra, all backed by the most potent incarnation of Tommy Dorsey's band, which Dorsey had greatly enhanced by adding drummer Buddy Rich and arranger Sy Oliver shortly before the Pipers and Sinatra came on board in early 1940. Liner notes by Will Friedwald are typically literate, well informed and a wonderful short course in the musical world the Pipers inhabited during these years. For my money, anything with Jo Stafford on it is a must-have item, and of course Sinatra too (the Chairman's complete Dorsey recordings have long been returned to print and are the cornerstone of an essential Sinatra collection). This is sophisticated, swinging and often romantic big band art by foremost practitioners of the style.
