Why this book is worth reading
This book was originally titled "Why Us? When Bad Things Happen to God's People." The current title has the same content, just smaller type face. Excellent content in thinking through the unexpected, painful, and tragic circumstances of life. When someone says, "It isn't fair!" the author explains the assumptions behind the statement, and reveals what we believe about our world, human life, and God. The author draws from the Bible, from philosophers ancient and modern, poets, history, and human experience to make his case. There are no simple answers here, or shortcuts. But there is much help for facing reality when life falls apart.

A Faith-Affirming Read
This book is sermons compiled by Warren W. Wiersbe from expert pulpiteers of an earlier generation. The preachers include Henry Drummond, Charles Spurgeon, John Henry Jowett, J.D. Jones, G. Campbell Morgan among others. The theme of each sermon is an aspect of God's love as experienced by God's people: God's love that saves from sin, comforts in grief, lifts from failure, and heals what is broken. Each sermon is based on a Bible text. These messages are good for daily reading, or in those times when you feel that God is far away.

No Easy Walk to Justice
Recently-published books on social justice, equality, and wokeness often refer to John Rawls' foundational work from 1971, A Theory of Justice. It begins with a lot of theory, but he defines his terms clearly and provides indicators in the text to keep the reader alert. Rawls argues for "justice as fairness" especially against the doctrine of utilitarianism. Finding justice requires balancing the tension between everyone's rights and improving life for some at the expense of others. Eventually Rawls gets to specific situations, which clarify his methodology and argument. It's a deep dive, but very helpful as a standard by which to judge the current chaos that swirls around "justice." This book was published over fifty years ago, yet it where the "experts" go to test their thinking and beliefs for today. If you want to shape the future, know the past.
