Korngold Symphony plus extras
Incisive renditions by John Wilson and his London Sinfonia of 3 late Korngold works, including his only Symphony. Wilson especially brings out the darkness of the Symphony's slow movement, often thought to be a memorial to the late president FDR. The other 2 lighter works are performed with brio and panache. Excellent recorded sound in SACD format.

The Met Wagner Ring Lepage production from 2010-11
The DVD version of the NY Met's 2010-2011 complete "Ring des Nibelungen" , on 7 discs plus extra "Making of the Ring" movie disc, is an affordable alternative to the higher priced Blu-Ray release. Sound quality is excellent, and while image resolution is gained via Blu-Ray, the price difference is substantial. My purchased DVD set, described in "Acceptable" condition, was actually in very good condition with all discs playable and booklets, housings, etc. in near-new shape. The Met orchestra is above criticism in its virtuosic playing and stamina. First 2 operas of the 4 are conducted by the late James Levine, the latter 2 by the Italian maestro Fabio Luisi. If any comparison, Luisi's approach maybe slightly more lyrical vs. Levine's slightly more dramatic readings, both are superb. Vocal highlights include Debra Voigt's first assumption of Brunnhilde, Eric Owens' magisterial Alberich, Bryn Terfel's Wotan, and Jay Hunter Morris' late and impressive fill-in as Siegfried. The Robert Lepage production, a brilliantly inventive melding of modern technology and imagery with other more traditional values such as costuming and set environments, is perhaps best known for the many-planked and adaptably moving "Machine" that acts as a unit set for all 4 operas. The vocal and sound-initiated computer generated imagery, for me, brings Wagner's imagined stage directions and details into very realistic life. Use of color and movement help make the visuals of this Ring into one of the most impressive of recent Ring productions at any major world opera house. Highly recommended.
