Joseph Conrad is an important figure in early 20th century literature and needs to be read.
The Short Fiction of Joseph Conrad comprises 26 volumes, of which this order was for two of the early volumes. Conrad is an important 20th century author whose work is relevant to anyone who studies early 20th century literature. That work includes the novel Lord Jim, Heart of Darkness, and a number of other fine pieces that are well worth reading. Every student of 20th century literature should read him for his style and content.

For an understanding of Solzhenitsyn's life and work, GULAG ARCHIPELAGO is required reading
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is a great writer, usually associated with his fine novels. His three-volume GULAG ARCHIPELAGO is not strictly speaking a novel, although it does tell stories. It is Solzhenitsyn's most famous (and probably most ambitious) work, by a wide margin in the western world. It is written not diminishingly from experience, but it is not merely a memoir. It is an indictment of an inhumane system of punishment in Russia that seems to be self-sustaining.
This is an important work in modern Russian literature, but it is not for the naive nor the faint of heart. Many consider it Solzhenitsyn's most important contribution to 20th century literature, and I would not argue with them. It is a hard book, though: hard to accept; hard to read in as far as it condemns human nature with the fact that the Gulag exists at all.
More's the pity that such a harsh book should be required reading for an understanding of human nature.

This is a book, purchased for its contents, which I wanted to reread.
It isn't better than I expected. It's a book, purchased for its contents, which are exactly what I expected. I've read it before, but I lost track of my previous copy which I decided to replace. It is not something new.
I own thousands of books. I don't break into a sweat over any one of them. This one happens to be well written and memorable. For that I recommend it. The author is Ian Fleming. I happen to like his writing and his character, James Bond. I recommend all of Ian Fleming's James Bond books.
