Under The Wire
I've read this book many times over the years and have always given my copy away for others to enjoy so have had to purchase it again for my own enjoyment.
Before originally buying the book I put it down many times as it was about an American Spitfire pilot and not a British one, this was a massive mistake as it's my favourite book.
The book tells the true story of William Ash who road the railroad during the depression with one of Billy the Kids posse and then wanted to join the fight against Hitler as he didn't like bullys. As America wasn't in the war the author had to give up his American citizenship and become a Canadian which wasn't without its difficulties due to his weight.
William (Bill) makes it over to England and becomes a Spitfire pilot along with those from many other nations French, Czech and of course the Poles (303 squadron, of course the film's usually just portray the RAF pikots as public school types with Northerners as Cockneys as the mechanics and for me it's wonderful to see their artist licence laid bare.
During one of his sorties Bill gets shot down and becomes a serial escape artist. What I love about this book, and others of this of ilk, is the way humans continually triumph over adversity and the ingenuity in their escapes or the pure simplistic genius to get out of the POW camp gates risking their lives to do so.
This is a proper 'boys own' adventure with daring and humour. I couldn't help but feel connected to Bill as we went on journey of capture and escape together and loved the characters we met on the way.
I can't recommend this book highly enough and it should be on the school curriculum; it is very well written (unlike this review) and is an example for why you shouldn't just give up when the chips are down.
Buy and enjoy

Believe
Andrea's version of Hallelujah is absolutely stunning and the album price is worth it for this one song. Unsure why ynwa is the opener though, but that's from a football perspective. Another great album from the maestro

A great read
This is a great book and a great advertisement for the heights that we can reach with hard work and dedication. Its written in plain, matter of fact english and tells the story of one of Britain's elite soldiers.
You can't help but like Rusty and some of his crazy antics and I cant can't recommend this book highly enough
