Intensely moving
Tom Courtenay plays a volunteer soldier in the trenches of the Great War, where he struggles to understand why he has simply turned away from the front line and decided to head home - on foot. His superiors see simple cowardice, for which there is only one punishment... But, is he suffering shell shock? Dirk Bogarde is the sympathetic but efficient officer tasked with trying to defend him, Leo McKern the crass doctor, devoid of sympathy sealing his fate. There are many themes familiar from World War 1, where warm camaraderie was the only comfort that held the troops together in the most appalling of circumstances. The other men are sympathetic to the accused's plight, as they have all shared his experiences on the battlefield, and they are loyal to the end. The viewer is not spared the horrific reality of life for the troops, as the men endure endless explosions, heavy rain, rats, mud and daily death, while the accused is held in a makeshift cell. The recreated trenches are thoroughly convincing and even the court martial is held in a shabby dugout on the battlefield. Hope fades as the defence fails to overcome the ludicrous hypocrisy and double standards of military authority, which leads to an inevitable conclusion and the ultimate sanction. The final scene is intensely moving, as the young man suffers a final indignity at what should be his final moment, and Bogarde is left to step in. Wonderfully shot in atmospheric black and white, with fine performances (Courtenay's slightly unconvincing accent aside and Bogarde's tendency to automata-like performance when not emotionally engaged), this long-forgotten film deserves to be rediscovered and appreciated.

Tina Charles is pure pop perfection!
One of the best female voices the UK has produced, Tina Charles' musical output has been sadly sporadic since her heyday in the 70s. There are still some stand out tracks to be found among Tina's more recent releases and (although this track is now twenty years old) 'Lost In Love' is one.
The track opens as if heard via crackly vinyl, but quickly fills out to a bass-driven backing track provided by The Disco Brothers. It's a retro-pop of suitably seventies-sounding electric guitars, tom-toms and electronic drum machine 'heartbeat', with a heavy bassline driving a dance-club vibe. Add some subtle strings, nifty percussion and punchy orchestra 'hits', then overlay with Tina's fabulous vocal. Along with her lead vocal, Tina provides sophisticated backing vocals of many parts that really showcases her talent and demonstrates just what a well-produced track 'Lost In Love' actually is.
Although this track was produced as part of a 'presenting stars of the eighties' series, Tina's only significant success in the eighties was with a remix of her 1976 number one hit 'I Love To Love'. So this track is essentially an homage to the 70s, but who better to present it than the disco queen herself!

Very enjoyable
Well-made and enjoyable B & W film from the 50s, with Richard Attenborough, who turns in a good performance as a newly-wed who is accused of murdering a little girl. Lance Comfort directs a lovely little film, with humour and heartache around it's central tragedy. Vintage film fans should enjoy this.
