If you like trains, bridges, dams, and history, you will love this book!
This book is a must-read for anyone familiar with the history of northern California, the "mother lode", or the California Aqueduct. Author Larry Matthews grew up in Oroville during the time the dam was built, so he has a unique perspective on events surrounding the dam's construction. I was fascinated to read about the major changes that took place to the area involving relocation of cities, the demolition of bridges, building of new bridges, relocation of the oldest suspension bridge in the western states, and an unbelievable train wreck. Chapter 4 entitled "Disaster" will keep you on the edge of your seat.
