A great book made into a historical Oscar winning film
3 von 3 finden das hilfreich When Sigourney Webber meets Mel gibson in Yakarta with smells of Frangipani and kretek cigarettes and the film is based on the historical events of 1965 of Sukarno removal from power by the CIA, the picture is not frivolous. Oscar winning for this film is Linda Hunt as the dwarf Billy Kwan. The Fantastic Music includes themes from greek composer VANGELIS, Maurice Jarré & classic themes by Richard Strauss. The cast includes beautiful Philippine pop diva KUH LEDESMA as Tiger Lily & talented Filipino actor BEMBOL ROCO. The Film is based on same titled book from australian writter & journalist Christopher Koch. "His brother was the Australian journalist Philip Koch, whom Guy Hamilton is based upon. The author used his experiences as the ABC foreign correspondent in Jakarta from 1965 to 1967 to write the book". In Billy, the dwarf, Koch created one of the most memorable characters of recent fiction. I read the book and saw the film. Peter Weir the film director, made this the BEST FILM of year 1982. Romance, ethnical culture, understanding for history, this film is remarcable. I saw the film first time and had to study in profoundity the history of Indonesia. Only then i understood the amazing facts behind the Film. The Film obligues you to search further info if you have a drop of curiosity or intellectuality inside you. Few films can do that. The romantic part is very well performed and Sigourney shows why she is such a wonderful actress. The role of Billy Kwan by Linda Hunter is simply amazing. She is a wonderful actress and deserved the Oscar for this film. Regarding the historical reality, a corrupt general Suharto makes a Coup d'etat within the army aided by the CIA (read William Blum's "Killing Hope") to throw Bung Karno (Sukarno,the founding father of Indonesia) from power killing at least 1 million people. But the Indonesian people organises again to be masters of their own history. This Film is the popularization of the history of the indonesian people into the western world via Hollywood. G-R-E-A-T film. It will reassure your identity as a world citizen. The voice of Linda Hunt & Bembol Roco has many messages for the world. Very Highly reccomended.
