RODAN (1956) Original TOHO DVD Japan Import GODZILLA Kaiju Dinosaur RARE Mint!
21. Nov 2018
A Must-Have for the Kaiju Eiga Lover of the Golden Age!
Picture quality is excellent. One of Ishiro Honda's true masterpieces, still holds up today. Akira Ifukube's score is outstanding and Eiji Tsuburaya's effects are eye-popping. What makes this DVD edition all the more unique is that Toho digitally erased the piano cables that were used to lift the costume and flap the wings in the segment where Rodan faces off against the tanks in Fukuoka Square! (I know, I own a copy of this DVD). - Peter H. Brothers, author of "Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men: the Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda."
Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster ! / Ebirah: Horror of the Deep ! [Blu-ray], Very Go

Entertainment Replaces Enlightenment
The first Godzilla "Kiddie" Film and the first in the series to have a totally happy ending, "Ebirah" marked a profound shift in the series. Previous films directed by Ishiro Honda were for the most part made for adults with subliminal messages, but this one - the first directed by Jun Fukuda - was produced for an adolescence audience that no longer wished to be enlightened, just entertained (there were commercial considerations as well as the adults had tired of monster movies).
Director Jun Fukuda keeps the pace moving briskly along and Masaru Sato's musical score is full of electronic guitar rifts and bandstand music complementing Seichi Sekizawa's comic-book tale of outrageous characters (played by such wonderful actors as Kumi Mizuno and Akira Takarada), illogical situations and tongue-in-cheek monster battles. Haruo Nakajima portrays Godzilla as a titan with a temper fighting the mighty Ebirah, with cameos from a Big Bird and the mighty Mothra. There's singing and dancing, gunfire, slave labor and a nuclear explosion. In all the film is entertaining but a far cry from the more serious entries in the series, and they would stay that way for quite some time (the DVD picture quality is excellent).
