0304 Not a bad album, but lacking any real anthems
I love Jewel's voice and think I will buy just about any album she makes. However it took me a long time to track down a copy of this one and its follow-up Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. Neither really sold well in the UK and on listening I would agree it is not her best work. The problem is sometimes Jewel tries to squeeze in many (admittedly clever) lyrics at the expense of an overriding structure and one good forceful idea that goes well with a tune. Songs like Fragile Heart work really well, even intuition has a good hook, but ultimately it is not really chorusy enough to work as pure pop/ dance and a bit too bland to be really alternative. The other thing is production and sound editing; now I don’t usually notice this sort of thing, but it seems on this record they have tweaked Jewel’s sound to iron out the high and low notes and make a kind of wall of noise. Really though I think it is the dynamic range that gives Jewel character in live recordings. This is why I would like to hear the songs on this album live much more than I enjoy them on this CD I would have thought. (Unfortunately probably won’t happen now she has gone country I suspect.) Overall I would say don’t avoid, but just don't hope for too much, its Jewel, but it isn’t Spirit. As a side note, also beware, there is very strong copy protection on this CD and I couldn't rip it to WMA which means I can only listen to it in the car, a bit annoying if I had paid full price.
