Hardly the high point of the series, but good for what it is.
Gran Turismo Portable is a technical marvel given the console it runs on. Visually it manages to capture the feeling of its PS2 brothers despite much weaker hardware, and the driving physics are up to snuff with the others as well. The car list is *outstanding*, featuring the series debut of Ferraris, including several formula 1 cars, alongside the already great selection from GT4. Where the game starts to fall apart though is its singleplayer. Car upgrades are completely gone, tuning is simplified, and there's no championships, only quick races. This gives it a very weak sense of progression, so unless you have a friend with a PSP to play multiplayer with, you'll run out of things to do rather quickly, something I can't say for GT3 or 4. I don't think this is a must-play for racing game fans who aren't already into Gran Turismo, nor is it a console seller for the PSP, but as someone who's already a fan of both, it's a very good game and I'm glad I've played it. Best suited for short bursts, fitting for a handheld game.

Considered a must-own for PS2 fans for a reason
While TM:B certainly shows its age in many places, it has a highly unique bleak vibe that stands out from other games in the genre, and the gameplay is incredibly fast-paced and tense, much more hectic than most other games in the series, with low time to kill meaning you can never get too comfortable standing still. The cutscenes are cheesy and try too hard but I wouldn't trade them for anything, the characters have interconnected stories that still stand on their own, and the over-the-top edginess is part of the charm. It's ugly in a way that thematically really works, and it really does stand out against other games on the system. Strongly recommend to any fan of the genre.
