One of the best reads, ever. A classic for humanity.

If you've never seen Cannery Row, and it's town-lets, Steinbeck gives you a beer-shake, frog scented taste of that which is sublime here in the actual space and in the mind of Steinbeck longing to return to the sea and to his friends real and imagined.
A book written more for men who have grown weary of women, to tell the truth. As a feminine woman, I'm not insulted. I can peek into the dank, dingy world of these men who see the same scene as one of glorious. It's like a trip to a tire & wheel or hardware store when a gal would rather be shopping for lingerie or makeup.
Thanks John, for explaining what the guys find so fascinating in what appears to be nothing at all but is obviously the whole, damn world.

History of New York tenements
I bought this for research on a book I am writing.
Riis was the first person to explore the horrific conditions of early immigrant lives, prejudice, and living quarters.
If folks think they have it bad NOW, Jacob Riis was a reformer who forced the country to look at the ugliness and begin humanitarian change toward the Irish, Italian, Jew, and all others coming to the land of opportunity in 1860's+.
A great eye opener in regards to immigrant issues today. Americans hated immigrants then...the arguement has not changed...just the countries of immigration.
