Intelligent and unusual
The author was a well-established psychoanalyst in San Francisco when she had an unplanned encounter with what is often called the "paranormal." This baffling experience caused her to seriously explore the field of scientifically proven psychic phenomena. But the real theme of her work is to try to explain why such knowledge is banished from consideration by mainstream science.

Favorite nonfiction 2017
This book has such a broad historical scope and at the same time an intimate focus on the lives of her patients. Especially interesting to me was her eyewitness account of a traditional hospital community being forced into a frame of "safety" and "efficiency." Expect I'll read it again someday.
