The California Gold Rush And The Coming Of The Civil War by Leonard L. Richards
    17. Dez 2018
    pretty right on
This book conveys to the modern reader little known political facts of 1850's California beyond the Gold Rush. The power of Southern migrants, slave supporters, and attempts to create a slave state n the lower half of California, and into Mexico is amazing history. The machinations of James Gadsden to expand U S territory is shown to be another move on the part of pro slave Southern interests to add move land , more influence in the national Congress re the slave question.Certainly this checking of salve expansion did add fuel to the fire of impending Civil WAR. Makes you think "what if" ? Congratulations to Author Richards.........

The beginning of the end of Slavery and the Plantation South...
A beautifully researched book that deals with a vital, poorly known era of U S history.. I find that the young officers who fought in Mexico proper and Mexican California, are fascinating to know. This war set the table for our Civil War, the reasons for it and the major players who evolved from brother officers to deadly enemies.... Great stuff!!!
