Presonus Audiobox iTwo USB/iPad Recording USB Audio Interface + Software

a decent little interface with a misleading fla
I purchased this interface to use with an iPad and multiple kappa as the start of an iPad/iapp/soft synth based keyboard rig for live performance. At minimum, the iPad connection was supposed to "trickle charge" the unit it was connected to, keeping it from running down during a performance. I tried multiple AC adapters with more robust specs, no luck. eventually was told no, it doesn't send any power down the line whatsoever. The comments and notes are still there around the web and from many sellers (not the one I bought this from, who only had minimal info) for the price, it does (Almost) everything I needed just fine. It has since been replaced with two interfaces that do exactly what I needed - putting this in t he "likely getting resold, or given to a friend who can use it" pile. I have two of the correctly working (for my use case) iPad interfaces and two thunderbolt interfaces for use with my MacBooks to get audio to the front of house. if you need an inexpensive interface, does midi, can use s standard lightning to USB cable, give this a shot. I just can't afford to risk an iPad losing juice at the end of a five hour set.

For the money; strong sounding VA w/ lots of hand-on editing possibilities
The Alesis ION is a strong virtual analog (VA) piece. Now that they are discontinued, they average $500, and for that price,, its a steal. Two products are stripped-down descendants of its sound gen engine, the Alesis Micron and Akai MINIAK, neither of which offer anywhere near the great interface and experience as on the ION. Sound wise, it has a character all it's own; unmistakably VA, leaning heavily toward the supercrisp lows and crystal highs. Overall,I've found the ION to be kind-of bright, not super-lush or super-warm - cuts nicely in a mix, which can be great, but it always wants to take the limelight. Takes some effort to program sounds that sit properly in the background, This is my second ION, and I also have a MINIAK (size reasons), as well as nearly ever VA introduced since the Nord Lead 1 and a representative of most of the high-end analog polys from the sequential prophet 5 on (only thing missing is a CS-80).. While the ION will never replace any of my "real" analog pieces, it certainly has a character that is worth having, especially for the price point. Built decently well, lots of control, good feedback from the display, and sized right physically for most applications. Comparing directly to everything else would be beyond the scope of this mini-review, but I believe the ION stacks up well against similarly priced competition, and, for the interface alone, deserves a look. (Personal Favorite VAs that I own : John Bowen Solaris, Radikal accelerator, Novation Supernova II (better than Ultranova IMHO), and the Nord lead series)

it's 'ok' for $150, it's a nice controller with sound but SO cheaply built
Hi, I have a large collection of "short boards". both mono and polyphonic, VA and analog, old school and new school that I have ended up with in my quest for the perfect performance rig (that literally won't break my back - I'm 36 and can't lift more an 15 lbs,-and eventhat is a challenge....) I play a bit of everything, but mostly pop/dance/and new wave. I have a very large collection of synths (63- 61 key or greater keyboards and 100s of rack units.). I try and keep these small synths separate in my mind, because I can actually carry and use them live, but I do have an example of a good number of non-modular synths. I'll confine this review to units with a similar form factor - Korg microx, Microkorg, Microkorg XL, Mopho keyed. the build quality on the Novation is pretty bottom of barrel, it competes with the Korg microkorgxl for the absolute most toy like. the engine sounds decent, has some of that great liquid character that Novation synths have had since the supernova (I have a supernova II EXP, which I consider one of the finest VAs out there, along with John Bowen's Solaris and Korg's Radias.). what is not good: the keybed is terrible, virtually playable as a professional. the knobs are way to close together, and no AT, compared to Korg's stuff (the microx - mini triton... Microkorg XL - Mini Radias... Microkorg - mi I ms 2000... Dave smith Mopho keys -real analog, but mono (so I have a tetra to expand the voice to 5 - but the lack of efx is tough to take live) so bottom line - each of the similarly priced and sized pieces has a nice amount of power and based on a nice engine. if the MicrokorgXL was built better, a small Radias would be a hit.... oh wait... The R3. THAT hit, and not too much bigger,,, killer editor, killer variety of sounds, and a dead clear vocoder. I have 3 Novation XIOsynths. The were all cheap, essentially new in box, and work well. would I trus it on the move - no. is the sund THAT expressive to use as a single unit on the go - no. software synths have eclipsed that long ago - and a better built controller with more templates would probably be a better buy. BUT.... ifyou need sounds in your controller just to hit some basic ideas, this is an okay piece, and at least it has decent efx. The Ultranva killer, but that's much bigger, and much more expensive, - save your money for that, or something else built like an instrument not a toy. -j
