Sophisticated Fright
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich Edith Wharton portrayed the upper social classes of nineteenth American and British Society with a skillful, discerning, and brilliant mind. She learned the subtleties and tricks of the ghost story from her dear friend, the Master Henry James. Behind the dark stair cases of old mansions, and flickering lamps, and whispering of nuances of sin and darkness out the servants quarters, Wharton often dramatized the fears and secrets of the privileged classes in outwardly supernaturally stories. The late Victorians thrilled at the hints of the unknown and dead haunting people lives. The magazines of the day printed them in droves. This video gathers together competent actors and superb late Victorian settings and recreates the chill ambience of six stories wonderfully filmed.. Are the ghosts real or allegories of the fearful inner states of the characters? The viewer will have to decide. It would be best to read Wharton's stories and then enjoy the video. Some of the ambiguity of the plots will take on clarity. Nothing is quite resolved, a mystery remains in all the tales. In that sense a "haunting" of the shadow side life will linger with the viewer.
