APPROACHING ALI, Davis Miller; AUTOGRAPHED for BUYER
    31. Dez 2015
Wonderfully fascinating and affirming reflections on a legend..and his sometime-protege.
I came to the table somewhat late per my great appreciation of Davis Millers' writings; his books on Ali and his fond appreciation of him interwoven with his own fistic development to help him out of a terribly humiliating American High School Experience, in the case of males, reserved for those who do not measure up physically or athletically, are written with grace, humility, and brutal honesty, while never losing his affection for Ali-warts and all. His writings have interlaced Davis' own inspired physical development and foray into martial arts(by Ali. . .and to a lesser extent, BRUCE Lee)with the painful drama of his own early life and subsequent struggles to make a living as a writer-no mean feat in itself. Miller, in the span of his own life, accomplishes an an astonishing transmogrification from would-be kickboxer/fighter into a true and remarkably accomplished man of letters. This near-magnum opus is a different 'animal'; he, again, perhaps borrowing from the so-called New Journalism, traces his own 35 years plus relationship with Ali, and comes to grips with mortality, injury, infirmity, and the quiet, almost triumphant psycho-spiritual evolution of the man he will always call "Champ", now in the twilight of his life, silenced vocally and reduced physically, but none the less, no, MORE than ever, perhaps, a presence which continues to affect and inspire millions all over the globe, especially now, in some cases, because of his inner peace with his mortality and Parkinsons' affliction. The book is almost Proustian in it's evocation of the sights, smells, and minutiae of Ali's daily life, in it's now nearly-full span, particularly since his being challenged by an unrelenting illness. .and his own mortality. Davis' introspection of just what the "Champ" has meant to him for so many, many years, and his beautiful appreciation of how Ali has turned a devastating illness, to some, extent, into even a greater ability to inspire, is sometimes astounding.. .for those who would listen. . and understand. This book deserves a wide-as-possible audience, because it is about much, much more than the story of a world boxing legend and his encounters over the year with Miller; it is about the ability to transcend sport. .and even Ali's sometimes fractious history and controversial life in and out of the ring, and learn that the ability to affect people for good need not require even slight remnants of a once astounding physical grace, commanding athleticism, and legendary outspoken presence now the stuff of old films, and the province of places like YouTube for an increasingly jaded Internet generation. Please take the time to read this book; it is meant to be read slowly and and savored as a sort of "resurrection". A masterpiece.
