Not amazing quality and one of the disks was defective, but it was easy enough to return the disks for a refund.

Hero System Fifth Edition Revised, book and rules
There seem to be two version of the hardcover available, only one printed on good paper. The other's more like newsprint, but still works. The rules are beautiful and Fifth Edition has more supplements available than you can shake a stick at. Very smooth rule system, very fun.

Hominids: a book worth avoiding
This book sounded fascinating from the premise - an exploration of what it might have been like had Neanderthals been the dominant branch of humanity and what their world might be like if they'd continued to something equivalent to our current level of technology.
Getting into it, I had some trouble suspending my disbelief. For something meant to be somewhere between hard science fiction and speculative fiction, they started off in an odd way, having a modern Neanderthal pop into the modern Homo Sapiens world through some hand-wavy quantum physics that seemed a bit too stretched, but I was wliling to look past that if that's what the author needed to get rolling.
Not far into the book, the author laid out a scene with a college professor. The writing was ham-handedly intended to evoke a feeling of subtle menace, and sure enough, within a page or so the author used what I can only describe as lavish, lascivious wording to describe a brutal sexual assault, and then went on to explore the victim's internal reasoning for not being able to report the assault.
At this point I decided I had better things to do with my life, and I destroyed the book. Mind you, I love books, I bought this in hardcover to better preserve it, and I didn't do this lightly, but I was unwilling to have, for example, one of my kids pick up the book thinking it would be an interesting science fiction story only to be confronted with the sickness therein. There was no reason to use the prurient tone to describe an act of violence that's all too common in the real world. It was shameful and I'll not be reading anything from this author in future. I'm only glad I bought the hardcover from the secondary market so the author didn't profit from it.
