A memorable window into severa human hearts
Wonderful tale, wonderfully done. The theme music, entertwined as it is with the talents and character of Daniel's two loves, is breathtakingly effective. One heartrending but utterly believable twist in the various relationships follows another. Without any way detracting from the praise directed at others in the cast by previous reviewers, however, I would like to suggest that Romola Garai's Gwendolyn was a memorable and prize-worthy performance.

36 Fillette
"Pus ca change; plus c'est le meme chose"? or maybe not. Interesting to compare the dirty-old-man HH chasing his blase Lolita with the Euro-blase fillette ("j'ai quatorze ans") wending her way, 30 years later, through the physical and emotional desires of the men of various ages she meets and might "mate," and through her own unnervingly impulses as well.

1 von 1 finden das hilfreich This film is a spirited and generally watchable, but ultimately disappointing, effort to capture Chopin's famous tale. I've taught The Awakening for decades in my Amer Lit classes, and I wish McGillis had consulted some of us who've been over the text hundreds of times with thousands of students. Though McGillis is a viable enough Edna, several other characters are flat-out miscast or rendered only superficially: many nuances of plot and character are lost. The heroine's progress toward despair, so beautifully delineated in the book, is in film jagged and even implausible. Judicious voice-over, better editing, and maybe another few minutes of running time could have made the film much better. It simply does not compare well with Peter Bogdanovich's Daisy Miller, which captures its story beautifully, despite his having to deal with well-documented problems with the production. Still, any lit professor who loves Chopin's story ought to own this film; much good class discussion can arise simply from examining what's "wrong" with it.
