Poor accuracy
The cold (minimum) side reads 4 degrees lower than the hot (maximum) side when they should read the same. This may be caused by some small dark particles (iron float?) that are stuck at the bottom of the cold side, displacing the fluid. I can make it work by adding 4 degrees to the cold side reading but this is a nuisance. Nevertheless, this mechanical max-min thermometer has the advantage of not automatically resetting and not needing batteries. I use it in my garage for comparing actual inside vs. predicted outside nighttime lows so I can prepare for freezing temperatures that may damage the plumbing in my garaged RV when I am too lazy to winterize it.
