A masterpiece masterly performed and recorded
All reviews I have seen of this recording say how good it is. I agree. The work itself is superb and the performance is exemplary; and the late analogue sound is extremely good. No question of five stars from me. It is also great that Rostropovich was able to locate the original version of the work, which was Shostakovich's preference and is definitely superior to the later versions that toned down the opera's dramatic effect.

Top-notch performance and sound
Stylish, lively performances. Conductor adhered to the requirement for a double continuo--one for the ripieno and one for the concertino. However, the theorbo continuuo could have been a little more aggressive--it is a bit too reticent in my opinion. The rather large orchestra provides a bigger sound than is usually heard from smaller groups on other recordings. But the bigger sound gives these extroverted compositions more weight. Five-stars from me for both performance and sound.

Excellent works excellently performed
Some people have expressed a dislike of the singer in El amor brujo. But the work requires a flamenco-type singer, not a classically trained singer. The cantaora on this recording does a very good job, though I would prefer a singer with a darker quality to her voice. In the El retablo de Maese Pedro the boy narrator is sung by a woman, but her voice is light and sounds somewhat like a boy's voice. Overall the performances are excellent, as is the recorded sound.
