Quads DVD by Callahan
I'm a BIG Callahan fan. I've lived in Oregon (where he lives) and seen him on the streets of Portland. His cartoon books are offensive and hilarious. My usual comment after reading something particularly un-PC like is "can he do that and not be jailed?" I own every book he's done. I've seen his short cartoons at sick and twisted festivals. So why is Quads so awfully average? The animators mimicked his art style so that's great. The humor is uncomfortably mean and raises an eyebrow here and there. The problem: disjointed storylines, more gross humor than sick humor and self censorship. Where's the edge? Where's the character? Group of unlikable, self centered and unfunny men all living in a mansion. Who cares? Rich next door neighbors who look down on the poor living next door? Been there. It's like the Beverly Hillbillies with crutches and vomit. Boring. I watched every episode hoping for a glimpse of Callahan genius. It feels watered down and meandering. I'd pass on a Quads Volume 2 BUT will keep buying his books!

Chelsea Boys - Stepping OUT!
Continuing the sassy, sexy adventures of the Chelsea boys, this is a hilarious and thought provoking study in gay psychology. Each character is well thought out, the art and color in the book is incredibly appealing. Lots of famous cartoons get referenced from the Flintstones to Peanuts. You don't have to be gay to enjoy the wit and humor, but it don't hurt either.
