Calumet Connection
My father was born in Calumet, MI in 1910. His father worked in the copper mines. This was the extent of my knowledge about it for many years until I read this book. It really opened my eyes.
Annie was the fearless leader of a bitter labor protest against the Hecla mining company. It did not have a happy ending. Instead it led to the deaths of more than 80 children at a Christmas Party for the miner's families. Someone yelled "Fire!" A panic ensued as the crowd tried to escape down a stairway exit.
The book goes into great detail about the strike and the crushing aftermath of the tragedy. Readers will never forget this little known but captivating story about Big Annie of Calumet.
Highly recommended.

Just Turned 22
This book, published in 1998, echoes Civil War themes that are now in our daily news cycle. Horwitz went to the actual scenes of battles to gather the dialog of locals concerning the "Lost Cause" and the after effects of reenactments, UDC and SCV efforts to enhance a nebulous heritage and the preservation of racial stereotypes by using revisionist history that ignores the Confederate Constitution stance on slavery and the role that SC played in attacking Fort Sumter.
It is an enlightening read written by a brilliant author who passed just recently.
