Best French-language paperback edition
This is the best French-language paperback edition of one of my all-time favourite novels: excellent notes and critical apparatus, and a good selection of illustrations from 19C editions.

Excellent, deeply moving biography
This is a superb biography of one of the 18C's most controversial political figures. In recent years, the mythology I recall from school has been stripped away. Peter McPhee presents us with an intelligent, courageous, charming but fragile young man, working himself to breaking-point, during a time of crisis which holds out no good options. Maximilien de Robespierre opposed the death penalty, and campaigned for democracy, religious freedom, Jewish civil rights and the abolition of slavery. The advent of a war which he had voted against forced him and his colleagues to take decisions they would otherwise have opposed; the chronic stress under which all were working magnified quarrels and turned them on each other. There were no cost-free choices. The price can be seen in the last portrait sketch shown in the book: the once-handsome face wasted and emaciated. The frequent collapses and illnesses are listed in the chronology, but it was not these which ended his life at only 36. The tragic horror of the last 24 hours will break your heart; as will the ease with which some of the worst perpetrators of atrocities destroyed someone who was trying to stop them, then tarred his reputation with their own deeds for over 2 centuries.
