Hell Boats
Part of the MGM Limited Edition dvd-r releases, and taken from a reasonably clean source print of the movie, although there is the odd speckle on a few frames throughout. The short synopsis on the dvd case doesn't bode well - "an American commander serving under the British Royal Army in 1942, is assigned to blockade the island of Malta and told to formulate a plan to destroy the Nazi arsenal in Sicily." Clearly written by a buffoon, given that the British occupied Malta and the Americans were on the same side, so would not be blockading the island! And the Royal Navy manned British ships, not the Army.
Aside from the cover gaffe, the Paul Wendkos-directed 1970 war film has good acting performances from the under-rated James Franciscus as the ruthless Lt Cmdr Jeffords striving for perfection from his tired torpedo boat force, Ronald Allen as his commanding officer Ashurst, and Elizabeth Shepherd as his straying wife, finding herself falling for the American newcomer. The Maltese scenery is beautiful, and the film is only let down by some cheap looking special effects during the final battle.
Overall it is great to see this finally on DVD, it just needs someone with a brain to rewrite the cover synopsis.

One of the great 1980s albums that got away from everyone, until now.
Fantastic sound quality on an album long overdue for a release on CD. Bonus items, including alternative versions are an additional bonus, along with Dane's comments on the recording itself. An under-rated genius.
