Inexpensive older strobes work fine with current digital cameras with planning
has the power of current makers $100--$700 units. Recycles comparably as fast. For manual usage, built in 1/16 to 1/1 power levels with slider controls allows very good control over output, at the same time allowing faster near instant recyle times at the lower power levels. Has AC/HVP input capability for 1 sec full pop recycle if you need it. Runs at 1/16 power for 400+ shots on four AA batteries. Perfect for strobist type shooting with multiple lights at minimal cost. Only downside is you have to make sure if you mount it on camera, that the shoe voltage does not exceed that allowed by your camera maker on today's digital cameras. Work around is.... use radio slave to fire your master unit in which case the hot shoe of your camera never sees the voltage on the stobe anyway. Use additional optical or radio slaves to fire any additional strobes when using multiple flash setups. Only downside is that in the auto modes, these units are generally limited to 400 or 800 ISO with their built in sensors, and TTL is not generally compatible with any current DSLR or mirrorless cameras, so you have to learn how to use guide numbers, or at the very least experiment checking histograms to get a handle on what settings you need to use on the camera to have proper exposures. Light is light, and if you handle these correctly you can get every much as good a results as you would with much more expensive current units.
