Nana (Oxford World's Classics)-Émile Zola, Brian Nelson, Helen C
    04. Mär 2025
Nineteenth century Paris brought to life in Zola's novels
Zola is an amazing author and Nana is part of the Rougon-Macquart series, each of which deals with one or more members of this disjointed family. The family comprises descendants of Adelaide Fouque and her two partners, first Rougon, whom she married and then her lover, Macquart. The novels trace various members of the family through generations and how each one fared in life, depending on their upbringing and circumstance. Nana is the 9th book in the series, daughter of alcoholic parents, a laundress and a roofer in mid-19th century Paris. Nana herself is an actress/courtesan. The book thought written many years ago is quite frank and almost shocking in it's language and Zola says he tried to use the speech of working class Paris. Other family members rise higher, one becomes a minister of state, another a builder who makes a fortune during Baron Haussmann's reconstruction of Paris. Yet another is a doctor, another runs a department store. I recommend the entire series if you're interested in 19th century Paris/French literature.
    MAJA LUXURY SOAP 3 BARS x 90g
    24. Jun 2020
Fabulous fragrance of orignal Maja scent.
Maja soap is all that is left from the original Maja range made in Spain by Myrurgia since, I think, the 1920s. The company was taken over and for some strange reason changed the Maja scent, so that the new version (now probably 20 years old or more) smells nothing remotely as wonderful as the original. Even the talc smells has been changed. But thankfully the soap is just as lovely as it always was. It has the most wonderful scent - am not a perfumer but I would call it woody, smokey, spicey, and subtle. This is why the I would say the soap is value for money, although it may seem expensive for three bars. If you ever knew the old Maja you will understand what I mean. So I will continue to buy this soap as a treat (just for myself, not to be used by the family!) from time to time and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to try the scent of a classic perfume. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
The Belly of Paris (Oxford World's Classics) by Émile Zola, NEW Book, FREE & FAS

    Emile Zola
I am currently reading through the entire Rougon Macquart novels by Emile Zola, twenty books following three related families in 19th century France. They don't have to be read in a precise order and each novel stands alone. But if you love Zola they are truly compelling and great reads. The translations by Brian Nelson are excellent although not all are completed yet.
