Oldie but goodie.
This Mainline coach has been around for some time. It was produced in the late 1970s / early 1980s, so what makes it so special and worth awarding 5 stars?
For me there are three main reasons -
Firstly, it looks right. The model is based on a Hughes/Fowler design for the LMS that was produced in the early 1930s. The design had a long life and was still in BR service into the early 1960s. This means it appeared in three guises - LMS, early BR and late BR and the model reflects this having been produced in LMS crimson lake, early BR carmine & cream (blood and custard) and late BR maroon. The shape looks good, the windows are almost flush-glazed and they have some minute window stickers applied onto the BR versions. The livery application, including the lining and window stickers is outstanding and stands up to comparison with much newer models.
Secondly, it runs well. I've seen no "wobbling" as it moves nor have I had coupling problems when run with other models from Airfix/GMR, Hornby and Bachmann. The wheels are plastic but I would imagine they could be replaced with suitable metal wheels from Bachmann if preferred.
Thirdly, it's relatively cheap. I've picked up decent versions for less than a tenner and pristine, boxed versions for around £12. This means that you can run a rake of three decent coaches for the price of one new coach and they do look good in a rake.
Overall, it must have been well ahead of the competition when first released and I think it can still hold its ground today against much newer and much more expensive models. All in all, what's not to like?

Charming little clock
I bought one of these clocks as a Christmas present for my wife, so it wasn't possible to review it till now.
The clock was easy to set up, following the instructions and started ticking and warbling pretty much straight away.... the bird songs play on the hour every hour except between 10pm and 5am ie overnight. In that way, it doesn't disturb you though I reckon you could probably set it up to carrying on singing every hour should you want to.
The birdsongs are clear and recognisable and loud enough without getting on your nerves and what's most important.....my wife loves it.
The clock keeps good time and the birdsongs add charm to it. It's brilliant.

Does exactly what it should do.
These storage boxes from Jane's Trains are a simple yet very effective and attractive way of storing and displaying your stock. They come as flat-packs but are very easy to fold into shape and so create an attractive and sturdy model box.
Whilst I have used them to store both steam and diesel outline models in my experience they are easier to use with diesels as there are less irregular parts eg chimneys and valves that sometimes catch on the inside of the box. Having said that others with more nimble fingers, patience or just common-sense will have no such issues.
I had the pleasure of speaking to a member of staff in the shop who I found to be most knowledgeable and helpful. He also suggested putting a small plug of foam at either end of the model when in the box to cushion the model should it slide around.
A simple product, very well executed and good value for money.
