Who NEEDS new?
With the proliferation of ultra small computers, Atom processors and such, the question is WHO NEEDS THEM? IF the answer is you, then consider an older ultra portable like this Dell C400. With docking stations available, or without, the C400 is a great little unit. you can load 1 GB of PC133 and an HDD of nearly any size, as long as it is IDE. I currently have two of them with the P3 1.2 GHZ processors (no swapping available)and they boot up and do many jobs faster than my ACER TRAVELMATE 803XLI, which was improved (from 1.3 GHZ to a 1.6GHZ, AND uses DDR) OF course, the more intensive the program, the advantage seings to the P4 cpu. But, for the person who just wants a small, great performing laptop at an unbeatable price, newer is definitely NOT better. This laptop is available in various sonfigurations, so be careful. the low end has a P3 866 (800?)MHZ cpu, while the top dog is a 1.33GHZ unit. There are tons of old units in various stages of completeness, so you could buy the slow unit, pull the MoBo and swap it out for a 1.2 or 1.33 MoBo in about 30-60 min, depending on your skill and fear level. Sound is a bit tinny, , but with headphones, it sound great! Video is not the newest, but it has a native 1024x768 screen with impressive video playback. It will handle multiple spreadsheet-type programs without much drop in performance, but gaming (which this is NOT designed for) expectedly lack power, but increasing RAM helps. Physically, the BIG design flaw, in my book, is the front loaded battery, which makes the palm rest area VERY weak. MANY units hve crack (or worse) palm rests. This happens when the unit is used without the battery. Battery life is fairly good, reaching into 3 hours or a bit more than one DVD This point leads to a new point: Why buy portable DVD players when a used laptop can do the same things and a whole lot more?! a 10" LCD portable DVD player CAN hook up to a TV, true, but who really uses it for that reason? A ultra-portable laptop can hold many, many videos of 350-700 mb with no real loss in watchability and zero chance of scratching your DVDs with potato chip salty hands! The C400 has two SoDimm slots as well as a an onboard mini-PCI slot for wireless card, bluetooth or any other card. It is week in the USB area (to be honest, ALL older platforms prior to USB 2.0 are week there) but with the standard PCMCIA slot, you can install a USB 2.0 card and now worries. The single USB 1.1 is still usable for backwards compatable Bluetooth and other dongles, to get the most out of it. All in all, these older computers, with a little upgrading, as just as, if not more useful than the cheap ultra portables that you can buy for new, and at a MUCH better price. When you DO decide to go new, and want to sell, this will net you little, if any loss. It is a perfect XP machine for the student on a budget, or sales person who needs more than a PDA, but does not want to break the bank or, as stated above buy it for the car and load it with videos and have it in the vehicle for road trips, with the added bonus of being able to check out the internet at the increasing number of restaurants that offer WiFi. Thaks for reading.

Price point bargain
Hitachi's 40GB 4200RPM 9MM 2.5" Laptop Hard Drive is a steal for $30, shipping included, if you are rebuilding an older laptop. It is the standard IEDE laptop interface that is compatible with all P1 and up laptops that were in use prior to SATA drives dominance. This drive is on the slow end of the spectrum, being a 4200 rpm model. As I installed in on a Dell L400 with only 700mhz and 256 mb, that is not much of an issue. It still boots faster than my Acer Travelmate 800 (1.6 Ghz processor and 512 mb ram) with a 160BG 5400 HDD. If you are thinnking of replacing an equal sized or smaler HDD in an older laptop and you are looking for a great deal, you cannot go wrong with this drive. It also make a great portable drive with a USB enclosure.

What do you want in a computer? If your answer is playing the newest games at the fastest speeds, this whole platform will do you no good. If, on the other hand, you want to watch videos online, stream or download, email, and do other internet activities, There is no need for anything new, at this point in time. In fact, socket 478 is still a valid choice. If it were not for the purposeful refusal to support older platforms, Pentium 3 would still be a valid choice for all internet activity. If you are running Win7 and older, this is as good as it gets on a budget. Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad are all pretty much worth their paltry price tag today. remember that these things were once the state of the art and have not lost any of their luster. Finding older software, often unopened is like a good treasure hunt. Buy new, only if you must. Buy older, dare I say vintage for ecological reasons, as well. Cut down on e-waste.
