A Mountain of Classic Soul
1 von 1 finden das hilfreich It has been an ambition of mine to own this music for three decades. When I was a poor student in London in the 80s I used to hang around London's Covent Garden market and enviously look through the racks of Stax/Volt 45" singles featured on this set. I had always admired the funky backing bands known to the world as Booker T & The MGs (the rhythm section - who can forget 'Green Onions') and Mar Keys (the horn section) - bands who feature on most if not all the tracks here. This set of nine CDs corresponds to a huge pile of immortal black vinyl. There simply isn't another box set to match it.
The vocalists featured on the Stax/Volt roster during the 60s include some of the most venerated names in Soul. Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Johnny Taylor, William Bell, Sam & Dave, and many more. This set is a monument to the greatness of the record label, famous offshoot of the famous Atlantic Records run by the legendary Ahmet Ertegun.
Of the two great centres of soul in America during the 60s, Stax/Volt tended to be more gritty and funky than the polished 'showbiz' productions of Motown and soul fans tend to split between the two camps. For me Stax/Volt had a little more integrity to it, due to the mutual respect held by the artists and the management of the record label. The Stax backing bands got headline billing and had their own hit records (they featured on the film The Blues Brothers too), unlike Motown where the band had to wait 30 years to be honoured, after many had died.
The lesser known songs on the collection are worth investigating too. In particular Mable John is a delight. Her singing has a paricularly heartfelt quality and her lyrics tend to be cynical and worldly wise, which makes her work stand out from the starry-eyed optimism of some of the more well-known love songs here.
The set comes with a large full-colour book of background information on all the artists.
There is so much here to be explored, admired and enjoyed. This box set stands as a tribute to a time when the three minute soul song was an art form. Just to hold all that great music in one box is an awesome feeling. Soul music has changed and moved on but this music will live forever.

A dud
This film is mostly small dogs dressed up in costume not doing much. The alsatian does more than the chihuahua. The plot is the same as Lady and The Tramp but without the fun, the humour or the decent songs.
Chihuahuas are fantastic dogs and this was a missed opportunity to give a flavour of their huge personality.
