Compelling story, excellent production, understated and engaging acting.
A very well made film telling the story of three US servicemen as they try to adapt to civilian life and the dramatic change of circumstances following their combat experiences in World War 2. The lead actors are very convincing in their parts and many returning servicemen must have identified with them and their struggle to fit in to domestic life. The production is excellent, external shots being shot in real time 1946 with their home town of 'Boone City' looking just the part, representing a successful, bustling town in post-war USA. And who wouldn't want to visit Al's bar, where Hoagy Carmichael resides at the piano! It is a long film, just short of 3 hours, slow-paced but engaging throughout. Probably best viewed in one sitting as I found it dragged a little towards the end when I watched it over 2 evenings.

Packed with detail about Britain's last great military aircraft design - the only successful vertical take-off jet fighter in the world.
If you are interested in the Hawker Harrier, this is a top book for you. From the early development of the P1127 (first flight nearly 60 years ago!), operation with the RAF and US Marines, evolution of the Sea Harrier, development of the Harrier II with McDonnel-Douglas, and up to the GR9 model, prematurely retired from the RAF in 2010. With chapters on the Anatomy of the Harrier (mostly model GR3 information), the Pilot's View, the Engineer's View, the Harrier at War in the Falklands and Afghanistan, there is lots of detail of how the aircraft was built, adapted, flown and fixed over the years. Also an interesting chapter about the only privately owned airworthy Harrier in the world. 176 pages, with many diagrams and colour photographs.
