A comprehensive coverage with many colour profiles
A large hard back book with many colour profiles and good line drawings.
It starts with a review of early russian ground attack aircraft and then explains the design bureau and factory concept employed in Russia.
The design development and structural details are explained. The decision to start production as a single seater and then the field conversion to twin seater is explained. The introduction of the production 2 seater in all it variants is detailed along with changes in forward armament.
The attempt to apply larger 37mm canon in the similar fashion to the Ju 87 was unsuccessful and predominantly the 20mm and 12.5mm armed version was used with bombs.
The type of bombs including anti armour hollow charge and anti personnel weapons is well detailed.
There is a large section on the in service use the aircraft with stories from many pilots and gunners. Photos of the pilots at the time of the conflict and their official photo when they retired as senior individuals does have a slight propaganda feel to it.
The accounts lack the post war time analysis of the effectiveness of the claims made in particular the accounts of the Il-2 pilots shooting down german single seater pilots.
The book is organised into effectively 3 section with the Il-2 , Il-8 and Il-10.
The use of the IL -10 is particularly interesting in Korea and the other far east conflicts.
The use by satellite Eastern block and Asian countries is nicely covered again with copious colour profiles.
In all a definitive book in terms of coverage but sorry not the most riveting prose style and somewhat grating in they way certain assertions are made.
I can think of no book that covers the subject better and the production values of the book are outstanding- recommended

Great book with amazing detail
The book details with drawing the modifications to make a dambuster Lancaster and also the individual history of each Lancaster involved.
The only gripe I have is the background colour for all the amazing art work is black. It reduces the clarity of the details to my eyes and a neutral light gray of white would have been preferable.
I accept black is the colour the aircraft operated in but I am not a night fighter and I would like to see the aircraft clearly.
