A perfect reference work for little hands and growing minds
My son really likes the Golden Guide series, of which he has five (Fossils, Rocks Gems and Minerals, Weather, Stars, and now Planets. Their pocket size allows him to carry them around and easily handle the book on his own, the colorful diagrams and occasional black-and-white photographs on every page keep his interest, and the text is advanced enough to challenge him without being too far over his head, even at this age. The copy we received is in excellent condition, and still a useful reference, despite being more than thirty years old (the copyright is 1990). Indeed, my son delights in the fact that Pluto is still classified as a planet, while for me this provides an opportunity to point out how science is an ongoing process of discovery and self-criticism rather than a magical path to absolute knowledge. (At this rate, I'll have him studying Roy Bhaskar's work before he finishes primary school!) The only thing I dislike is that the text is clearly written for North American readers, and consistently uses Imperial units for which my son has no reference. Then again, measurements at the planetary scale are so vast that it is doubtful that metric units would be much more meaningful in this respect.
