The Best Sci-Fi Exploring Social Values
The best sci-fi film ever. One of the best films over all. It creates an alternative world and invites us in. What does it mean to be human? What is the value of life? What is evil? How much exploitation can society withstand before it is not really society?

A bargain with the devil; egomania meets megalomania.
An actor, like a puppet, is at the direction of everyone behind and in front of the stage. What happens when the actor thinks that he can control those at the other end of his strings? Thomas Mann's brother-in-law must have been a real maggot that Mann should write such a story and allowed public knowledge who this was about. I am Mann wrote the story, that Istvan Szabo put it on screen, and that I now own this beautiful story of the danger of trying to control the whirlwind of evil, and of ascending too high while wearing wings of wax.
Then there is the sub-plot of the rise of unimaginable evil rising within a modern Western nation, culminating in death and destruction (that events subsequent to those in the film) will wreak on humanity. Could it happen again? The events of this film show how it did so while everyone went about their personal business, thinking that reason and moderation would ultimately prevail.
Again, could it happen again? Perhaps the better question is whether reason and moderation prevail today, or does everything seems stretched between extremes, with little in between? And I believe it's getting worse. We are one significant crisis from Central Europe c.1930.

Delightful story of the power that love can breed.
2 von 2 finden das hilfreich While most would complain that the romance goes gratified in the end, I would assert that the point of the movie is punctuated in this manner. Lust seeks self-gratification, while love actually balances this urge against self-sacrifice. The mindless brutality of war is depicted here as the setting, and that brutality is tempered with humanity in the end. Yet the cost of the brutality must be paid, as if the price of some Faustian bargain. And the viewer is left in the end, contemplating the cost of all the human families and madness with a string of "what ifs." Typical of Canadians to temper passions with introspective sensibility. Sad that this movie is largely unavailable in the U.S.
