Better than expected -- a pleasant surprise
Although I have heard numerous, strongly-expressed negative opinions about Red Label strings -- all from violinists, and mostly that the strings, while durable, sound strident, harsh, or disagreeable -- I find that different strings work differently on different instruments, and so I am open to a bit of trial-and-error from time to time. These Red Label strings were inexpensive enough that I decided to give them a try on my viola, but I had low expectations. On my small viola -- length of back just under 38 cm or 15 inches -- the medium-gauge G, D, and A strings were remarkably good. On this instrument, these strings provide a warm, clear, consistent, even tone and are responsive to the bow. In fact, although I usually use Larsen or Jargar A strings, I found that the Red Label A string perfectly matched the D and G. The medium-gauge C string was not good, however, because pressure from the bow dramatically raised the pitch of the string by as much as a half step; I replaced it with an Evah Pirazzi light-gauge C string which matched the Red Labels perfectly. Perhaps Red Labels are more successful on violas than violins, perhaps they are suited to small violas, or perhaps my viola (which is not student-grade) and these strings just happen to get along well. Either way, I am pleased with the result, and I plan to continue to use this setup.
