It's the Real Thing
2 von 2 finden das hilfreich The whole HBO miniseries Generational Kill's seven parts is faithfully included on three discs in this box set. Also included is a brief booklet identifying the cast, the characters, and a very helpful glossary of terms. The war in Iraq and how it is fought is so different from this Marine veteran's memories and experiences of conflicts 35 years ago that even I needed the guide to understand things said and done in the story. Having said that, one of the things I like best about this production is that for once the Special Features actually complement the story and clarify all of the things I didn't understand at first.
The other thing I liked was that the production realistically captures the personality and culture of US Marines so well that even a fossil like me could recognize. This is thanks to a lot of efforts on the part of the film makers that are best explained in the Special Features. But especially the realism derives from the fact that story is derived from actual events detailed in two bestsellers; some personnel who took part in the original mission made invaluable contributions to the production--one of them even playing himself; other Marine combat veterans lent their own expertise to the production; and finally--this is what got me--some of the Marine veterans trained (yes, trained) the cast and crew during a preproduction "boot camp."
Viewers--even sceptics--won't be disappointed.

Great Story Well Presented On DVD
2 von 3 finden das hilfreich The Hunt for Red October remains, after 20 years, among the very best Cold War drama adventures Hollywood ever produced. When it was first released I was working as an intelligence assistant with high clearances in one of the US agencies that played a prominent role in Cold War activities and in determining what the Soviet Union would deploy against the West next. So professional interests as well as being entertained drove me to see the movie. I wasn't disappointed then or now, though I was startled out of my seat at least once when the film accurately portrayed topics which I expected would have remained under top secret code word protection.
Although I had been enjoying a VHS tape copy, I was interested in the DVD version of Red October because of the special features. I wanted to know more about the making of a film that could so successfully combine action and suspense with the real world of intelligence problem-solving while mixing in a dose of high tech concepts presented for a general audience's understanding. Director John McTiernan's commentary handles those aspects of the film most effectively, even regarding the tiny, unexpected personality details that make the film so comfortable. His mixture of behind-the-scenes explanations and insights into the actors and others involved has to be the best commentary I've ever watched.
Discounting my professional biases, I regard The Hunt For Red October to be the best of the films adapted from Tom Clancy's amazing Jack Ryan books. I like Harrison Ford as much as anyone, and enjoyed his interpretation of Jack Ryan in the subsequent films. However, Alec Baldwin's interpretation of the character and his handling of the events unfolding around him (except for boarding a submerged Soviet nuclear submarine) reminded me of my own work and that of my colleagues who must remain nameless.
Highly recommended.

American Revolution Continental Marine flag bearer.
This is not only an artistically superb figure, but historically accurate as well. It's refreshing to find one of the less used flags to set off it's uniqueness.
