The best classic Woody Herman compilation available. Hurry before it goes!
This is an exhaustive overview of Woody's glory days that no big band's aficionado and classic jazz lover should overlook, not to mention the extraordinary quality of his vocal chops and the finesse of his intonation that every fan of classic jazz singing will be delighted to give a detailed listening. The music is sequenced in chronological order as every investigation of this order shoud be, and covers across four compact dics and ninety one songs in my opinion the best ten years of his career beginning with his Decca sides in 1939 in his "The band that plays the blues" phase, through his swith to Columbia in 1945 with his First Herd -of the extraordinary "Laura" fame- and ending in 1949 coinciding with the demise of the Second Herd sadly amidst several issues with substance abuse of many of his sidemen (does Stan Getz ring any bell?) according with the information contained in the very well written and documented book that's part of the package. Proper records does a very good job in the remastering department as well. The sound is clear and clean for the most part. Very recommended!!
