Canon EOS 20D -- Excellent buy.
This camera has all the features the advanced amateur photographer wants. While it's easy enough to use by even a novice, it gives access to all the features not present in the point-and-shoot cameras that the more advanced photographer wants, including aperture, exposure, ISO speed, white balance, and flash control.
Canon has over 60 EF and EF-S lenses available for this camera, dozens of flash options, filters, etc. And, they're all forward-compatible with the rest of the EOS line, so you can use the same lenses and flashes with your standard 35mm cameras. If you outgrow the 20D, you can seamlessly use your accessories with a better camera (for instance, the EOS 1D MkIII).
The price for what was included with this camera was extremely fair. The camera body, three batteries, three flash memory cards, a lens, and a UV Haze filter, all for $599 -- the body alone retails for around $699.
