Why is the O ring too big ?

Easy enough to fit once i replaced the O ring with the one from the old unit. Up until that point the sensor would not fit in no matter how much i tried. Other than that no complaints. Boiler no longer comes up with the F9 fault code and has stopped cutting out so happy days.
