Lavishly produced 80s-style pop

Future Islands' sixth album is more memorable than the last, and their most lavishly produced so far. The lyrics are at points more political than usual for frontman Samuel Herring ('Born in a War'), also touching on man-made environmental destruction ('Plastic Beach', 'Thrill'). Although there are not as many immediate standouts as on albums like Singles and In Evening Air, tracks like 'For Sure' and closer 'Hit the Coast' provide some hooks for the other slow-burns to work their magic. Still some of the best 80s-influenced pop around.

Intelligent and moving Science Fiction

The sequel to 'Axiom's End' picks up Cora's story in the wake of her encounter with ETI's (Extra-Terrestrial Intelligent beings). Lindsay Ellis gives her characters depth, empathy and intelligence, and keeps the plot moving at a good pace. The second novel in the sci-fi trilogy, 'Truth of the Divine' is at least as good as its predecessor.

Over-the-top Action Crime-Thriller

The starting point for John Woo's trademark style of action thriller, the plot follows Chow Yun Fat's gangster and his cop brother as they come up against a Hong Kong counterfeiting ring. It lacks the polish of his later works but the mixture of overwrought melodrama and over-the-top shoot-outs makes for an entertaining time.
