Steve Hackett revisited!
As an ardent Genesis fan from the '70s, I had always followed Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins as solo artists, but no others. I remember hearing Spectral Mornings when it was released but it didn't grab me at the time. In the past few months I have been collecting all Steve's solo albums and this one really is a belter! Anything Genesis done by a band other than Genesis always sounds odd to me at first as I know all the original works so well and this CD requires repeated plays before one 'gets it'. I really 'get' this album now from start to finish. Some of the orchestrations are very different to the originals, as are the vocal styles, and some improvements on the original tracks are there, to my ear at least. The recording quality is markedly better than the originals - such is the progress of technology. All in all, highly recommended, but one needs to persevere with quite a few listenings before the new versions of old favourites are etched into one's subconscious.

Refreshing in places
Having seen some very good Genesis covers band live, I had an idea of what to expect from this collection and, on the whole, I was not disappointed. Some tracks did not quite meet with my critical approval, but that is a personal thing rather than a musical quality issue. All in all, a worthwhile addition to my vast collection of Genesis material, and a good springboard from which to pursue other bands covering Genesis songs.

Chinese sander with a Metabo badge. No more, no less...
As with all the Chinese-built Metabo tools, this sander is above the quality of the really cheap DIY Shed end of the market, but put them side-by-side without labels next to bargain basement 'Parkside' brand tools from LIDL and the visual build quality and feel are remarkably similar (as is the colour!). I first bought Metabo tools on the promise that they were made entirely in Germany with German materials... Times have changed dramatically over the years, and this is my cheapest Metabo tool yet, bought quickly to get me out of a fix. It works well enough, with sufficient power to prevent overheating and slowing, however the paper is fiddly to fix, although this is perhaps the price to pay for a very compact design. Definitely inferior to Makita's offering.
There are a few specific problems with this tool that I have noticed in its few hours use to date:
1). Vibration feels subjectively higher than that specified. (I have tested many tools for hand-arm vibration issues in industry and have a fairly good 'feel' for this kind of thing!).
2). The dust collector becomes detached when working overhead.
3). Dust escapes considerably from the end of the filter through gaps in the assembly.
4). The clear plastic dust cover over the on/off switch is very much stiffer than similar items on other products, making it somewhat clumsy in use.
5). Really nasty stiff plastic power cable - one of my pet hates!
Only time will tell if the innards are better quality than the exterior, however it is a nice tool to use (apart from the above expected vibration levels) and does the job for which it was purchased. Provided one does not expect German Metabo quality at these bargain Chinese prices, most buyers should probably not be too concerned.
