One track wonder
Joan Baez was one of the “precious” folk singers who jumped on the bandwagon launched by The Kingston Trio and who then (unlike the Kingston Trio, Limeliters, PPM etc) started to take themselves far too seriously. There is not much fun or sparkle in this live performance and it would be in danger of falling into the worthy-but-dull category if it were not for her version of “What Have They Done to the Rain”, probably the most powerful song she ever sang (and one of the best by any of the “serious” folk-song performers). So, no laughs on this re-issue, a few dreary moments (how many schoolchildren recoil at the memory of endlessly having to sing “Kumbaya”?) but one soaring masterpiece that makes it all worthwhile.

Not as good as it gets
This CD appears to have been recorded from a vinyl disc -- you can hear the sound of the stylus on the disc at the beginning and end of each track. It is also in mono, which is not made clear in the accompanying details (and the original recording was made in stereo). So not recommended if you are looking to obtain a CD quality version of the original stereo LP. However, the price is ludicrously low, so the value-for-money factor is high. Presumably this is only possible because the recording will be out of copyright in the UK and so can be dubbed off disc without paying royalties. So Bob Shane and the surviving relatives of Dave Guard and Nick Reynolds will not benefit from the sales. But it is still good to know that recordings of this great group are available. Just a shame this version is only in mono.

What you see is NOT what you get!
This is a very odd package, presumably put together by someone who either has no knowledge of The Kingston Trio or who was unaware of the CD contents. Or who was trying to persuade people like me that this was a previously-unreleased rare live recording by the Shane-Reynolds-Grove version of the Trio. It isn't. The picture on the front shows that configuration of the group, but NONE of the tracks on the CD are by this line-up. To add confusion, the text on the inside refers to an entirely different configuration of the group. No tracks by that named configuration either. Instead, we have a mish-mash of recordings by the first and (mostly) second line-ups of the group, taken from previously-released recordings. Keen fans will probably already have them all. Those who haven't may well find tracks of interest on this CD at a bargain price – but anyone who hasn't heard The Kingston Trio live should really get hold of the original “From the Hungry i” and “College Concert” recordings.
