Toshiba Portege m100
I've been using two versions of this computer for the last six years. I regard it as a masterpiece of design, both compact and powerful. With 2gb of memory there are still few things it cannot do for office/academic sort of work (I use the 1.4ghz version -- I'm not sure whether there might not be a lower memory limit in slower models). They have come down considerably in price, so I have bought one as a spare. It is three or four years old, but again works without a problem. One thing to watch for is the keyboard. Best use it normally with an external one. Otherwise, these machines still have quite a lot of life in them.

Good value
Easy to install, produces expected result. On 200mbs line produces about 130 near by, and a reliable steady 33 on another floor quite a distance away. About 50 percent better than BT 500mbs adapters used previously. Definitely good enough.

Terrific value. Pared-down efficient operating system. Nice in the hand and on the eye.
