Get it!
One of THE classics from the glory days of brutal death metal! Technical, fast, and of course brutal for miles. Copious blast beats propel astounding riffs that leave you in awe but never get too proggy or abstract, backed by clear, crisp bass and topped by sub-cookie monster growls, all tied together with top-notch songwriting. What more do you need?

Medicine for icepick
I got this for the 498t in the bridge position of my old LP Special. It's always been harsh, thin, and scooped, and I have constantly tried to improve the sound by rolling off the tone knob with the stock ceramic .022 cap, but it sounded mushy and weak. With the Russian milsurp .033uf paper-in-oil, the resonant peak shifts down well into the midrange because of the larger capacitance, and now the pickup is thick, warm, and responsive, the way a "hot alnico" should sound. Yes, this is with the tone knob on 10. With the paper-in-oil material, the sounds I get rolling off the tone knob are totally usable--tight with sweet harmonics--all the way down to 0. Don't blow money on expensive "vintage" repros! Russian surplus pio's deliver the tone for the right price. On a further note, I use the Russian KY73 .022uf PETP (also available from Art of Tone) for the 490r at the neck, and it's another great value--sweet, slightly stinging high-end with a roll-off that is a bit fuzzier than a PIO, but with nice warm harmonics.

A louder and fuller sound for your Floyd
For years I thought all that hype about high-mass sustain blocks was hooey--until I got one! I wanted to replace the tiny stock 32mm block with a 37mm piece that filled the trem cavity properly. Additionally, the "L" shape adds a chunk of brass right under the whammy bar, just to push the resonance a tad more. Overall, I get a fuller sound with more chunk and sustain, like boosting the mids on my amp two or three notches but without any honk. The one drawback is that I lose a half-step or so when I do whammy dives, but I can live with that.
