better than feared, but not a classic Argento
If you are an Argento fan then this is required viewing if only to see how the mothers trilogy (Suspiria; Inferno) is concluded. The 27 year gap since the second movie is telling. Argento in the 21st century is in a different place. The studio bound lush visuals of the first two are replaced with a location set more action occult thriller approach. The violence is strong, but actually quite brief. The film struggles to convey the large scale apocalyptic effect on the budget it had. Compared to essential Argento (the first 10 ten years) there is little here to equal that, but it wasn't as poor as some critics have said and when you consider that 'Giallo' was to be his next film (truly his worst) then Mother of Tears holds up.
