Third-tier Jeanette
If you've never seen a Jeanette MacDonald movie, stop right here, go watch MAYTIME, and then the next day when you're a raging fan, come back and resume reading. Otherwise, you've probably already seen this dispirited effort. The plot, which was relatively fresh in the 1920s but already hackneyed by 1939 when this film was made, concerns a young couple, inevitably named Jimmy and Mary (played by Lew Ayres and Jeanette MacDonald). He's a songwriter, she's a singer, and they're looking for their big break. Not unsurprisingly, while auditioning one of Jimmy's songs for an unenthusiastic producer, Mary is pronounced a real find, and offered a shot at stardom on her own. Of course Jimmy nobly says Oh, go ahead, don't worry about me, this is your big break, so she takes the job and he spends the rest of the movie hating her for it while he works on his magnum opus, which turns out to be Tchaikovsky's "None But the Lonely Heart," original melodies having apparently been in short supply even in Hollywood.
Now, it's always fun to watch Jeanette, even when she's relatively lackluster as she is here (is it a broken heart? dyspepsia? ennui?), but even so, the movie's rather a mess. Sporting the usual-for-the-era "Gowns by Adrian," it also features some of the most god-awful clothes ever to mar the silver screen, with shoulders a yard wide (on the women!) and thick, heavy, itchy-looking fabrics that induce squirms of discomfort even at a remove of seventy years and several changes of media.
SO THEN, to return to my original premise: If you're a big Jeanette MacDonald fan, you'll like it anyway. If you're not, you may well wonder what all the fuss was about.

There Could Never Be Enough
Yep, Season 3 is just as terrific as Seasons 1 and 2. And the Interwebs are full of the plaintive cries of those who have seen it - "Where's season 4? Will there be a season 4? Who do we have to murder to get a season 4? Just name them! -- and so on. The Miss Fisher stories are an absolute delight, and Essie Davis and a wonderful cast bring the stories to life in a way that has even the most dedicated fan purists clamoring for more. Set in Australia in the 1920s, it follows the adventures of the rich, beautiful, independent and endlessly curious "Lady Detective" Miss Phryne Fisher (whose drunken, rich, ne'er-do-well father meant to name her Phoebe, but got confused on the way to the registry and, to Miss Fisher's unending pride, instead named her Phryne after an ancient Greek prostitute so successful that she offered to rebuild the walls of Athens after one of their wars).

Wierd and chaotic, which Clive Barker is...
Wierd and chaotic, which Clive Barker is certainly entitled to, but it's surely not a straight narrative! More of a ... curiosity.
