What a difference the SACD format can make!
When I realized that my Sony Blu-Ray player can play back CDs in the now-rare SACD format, I sought out a couple of my favorite albums to see if this format makes a difference. Does it ever! Not only does it play this beautifully produced album in 192khz 24bit, but it does so in Dolby 5.1 surround sound, which is the next best thing to having the band in your living room. I’m going to start looking for more of my favorite albums in this sadly-discontinued format. Oh, and the album just might be Mark Knopfler’s masterpiece, although his catalog is uniformly smashing. I’m only sorry that Mr. Knopfler has lately become so bitter about the effects of his musical career upon his health and family.
